Can you tell us a bit about PE at your school and why you decided to try Studio You?
We try to offer a really wide range of activities at our school to give students as much opportunity as possible to find something they love. So, whilst we do offer the traditional football, netball, rugby and other sports, we also do ultimate frisbee, Pilates and various less traditional activities, and that’s where Studio You has come in handy.
When did you start using the platform?
I started using Studio You last year within some of the schemes of work we did with our key stage 4 students. Two of the choices we offer our Year 10s are yoga and Pilates, so I used Studio You for those sessions. We did one lesson a week across a 4-week scheme of work.
How do you typically use Studio you within your lessons?
Our lessons are about 90 minutes so I usually split them into sections, starting by doing the first part of a Studio You video as a class, then sending students off into small groups to come up with their own sequences and routines based on the moves they’ve learnt. I usually end by bringing them back together to do the second part of the video as a class. We found this worked well, because the class were learning from the instructor, then going away to put what they’d learnt into practice, then coming back together to solidify that learning.
How have your students responded?
Overall, students have responded really positively. I think it’s beneficial for them to have a different voice instructing them sometimes – exposing them to instructors that are professionals in their particular discipline is really valuable.
